It was rated as best picture for non HD programming over any of it’s competitors. Going shopping for these things locally is similar to buying a used car – b/c most stores won’t show you anything but a HD signal – but I was able to get one store to show me a digital signal to a couple models and was able to view a DVD of TOP GUN on this and a few other models. Alot of brands will have a significant dropoff in quality from HD to digital signal – NOT this panasonic.
The picture in HD is simply amazing. Clarity / sharpness / at all angles of viewing both near and far away from the screen. The speakers are very good too – I will play a movie through the Home Theatrre – but day to day viewing the speakers will be more than adequate for most viewers.

The picture in non – HD programming – Comcast digital cable signal. About 85 % of the programming is pretty close to the same quality as High Def. Alot of the cable programming seems to be formatted in anticipation of High Def viewing and look very sharp and clear. Occasionally ( maybe 10 – 15 % of cable programming ) you’ll get a feed that’s not quite as sharp and ther’es a noticeable decline in picture quality from the HD or normal Digital programming. However – I’ve checked that same programming on my older CRT television – I found that the ( Non-HD programming with poor signal ) picture on the 50? plasma is the same quality as what I’m getting on my 20? non digital television. The only difference is that most of the programming is so much better in quality on this plasma TV that it seems like the picture isn’t good for those few broadcasts. BUT – it’s not poor picture from plasma Tube – it’s just a bad signal that looks worse in comparison to the other channels and/or programming.

I’m totally happy we bought this TV – and have no regrets for choosing the Panasonic. I’d buy this TV again in a heartbeat. The only thing I don’t know about is the longevity of this type of tube – but I’ll learn that over time. We spent 400 bucks on an in home 4 year service plan to accompany the TV. The marketing says it will last 27 years if viewed 6 hours per day – but I think that’s a little optimistic. I did however learn in my research that this technology has been around for 30 or 40 years so I’m hoping that means there won’t be any technical quirks to still work out.

*** Don’t let a salesperson talk you out of this TV if you have a large pictue window. I almost decided against the Plasma tube b/c a circuit city salesperson said the reflection would annoy me with a large window in the room. We have a west facing picture window in the rear with a tree outside the window. There is reflection on this tube – but it’s no different than the reflection you’d get with a standard CRT tube television. We just pull down the shades a bit – and we haven’t noticed anything that would be bothersome when viewing a program. We bought it with the assurance that if the reflection was an issue we could swap it out for a LCD or other television. We’re keeping the Panasonic Plasma!!!!

I really like this TV. It encompasses all that I was looking for. Buying a HD TV these days makes for some tough decisions. I found it impossible to make a clear decision from looking at the vast array of HD TVs available. The super big screens are impressive as are the super fine displays of the plasmas. For my purposes, I put picture quality over size. This lead to the plasmas and then to the Panasonic, which, along with Pioneer, have the best picture available, in my opinion,in plasmas.

My next criteria was the TVs ability to present a quality standard broadcast video, that seems to be about 90% of the material available today. HD is just beginning to become more adequately available today.
While shopping, I did not notice a huge difference in the quality of HD from one TV to another but there is a huge difference in quality at standard broadcast. You won’t see this in the stores because they always use HD to impress their customers. This is where this TV shines. The picture quality is amazing even when not a HD broadcast. This is important as it involves the TVs ability to improve the standard broadcast video. There seems to be a vast difference from set to set in this ability and it has a lot to do with the internal circuitry. All sets look great at 1080p, however they sure don’t look the same when it involves standard cable or standard satellite broadcast. The standard broadcast material on this set can look almost like HD depending on the quality of the broadcast. The poorer material looks just that, poor, but it is the broadcasters fault, not the TV.

1. A plasma must be carried straight up and down. The first one I purchased had a shattered screen (the whole TV had to be replaced) Not too good for internet purchases as they will not allow returns even if defective or damaged in shipping.

6. The set control comes set to “vivid” which sets the contrast and brightness way up and can damage the TV. You must first “break in ” all plasmas by running the contrast and brightness at “0? for the first 100 hours. This is a pain as this is about a months viewing for us because the picture is pretty dark. Also, you have to be aware of the screen ratios as some broadcast cut off the sides or bottoms/tops which leave a black border. This can cause “burn in” that can damage your screen. I find myself changing aspect ratios pretty often. You can watch all transmissions if you adjust the screen ratios to cover the entire screen and not leave any black bars anywhere.

8. A 50? screen just qualifies as a “big screen” in my opinion. 55? or 60? would be better but the cost now is prohibitive. I find it adequate at a viewing distance of 12' to 14'.

9. You can see the pixels if you get up close. (screen door effect) I guess it is the nature of the beast. The pixels are not visible after about 6 feet away.

After owning and watching this set for a little over a week, I have no buyer’s remorse. It was a good purchase and I am very happy. I highly recommend this TV. The negatives are very small compared to the positives, many being the nature of plasma TVs. Watching a program on HD is a real experience that makes you feel like you are there and this TV will do it. Calculating the costs of any hobby or vacation far exceeds the cost per hour of this quality of a television. It is really cheap entertainment and well worth the investment.

Then one day I was researching plasma TV’s on the internet and came across a web site that helped solve the dilemma. The information they conveyed suggested to me that the problem I was seeing with these Panasonic plasma’s was not associated with the quality of the TV, but rather with the quality of the picture adjustment (probably the standard default adjustment out of the box).

I first saw this Panasonic plasma at several major retailers. Although the TV was extremely well rated, what I observed were pictures that appeared unrealistic with HD (high definition) programs and cartoon-like with SD (standard definition) programs. It didn’t matter if it was this 50? model or the more expensive 58? model, in person the picture on these plasma TV’s lacked the quality I was expecting at each retailer I saw them. This didn’t make sense to me. I wanted to buy a reasonably priced plasma and one that was highly rated. On paper, the 50PX60U seemed to meet both these requirements. And yet there was the image I observed which I felt did not live up to the reviews.

As it turns out, the film and broadcast industry uses the Imaging Science Foundation optimum color temperature rating of D6500K as their standard when filming TV shows or movies. When the technical people who reviewed this Panasonic 50? model measured the color temperature of the TV out of the box, they found it measured in excess of D10000K. This setting was well in excess of the industry standard of D6500K and probably accounted for the fact the plasma looked so unrealistic to me at the stores. Most plasma TV manufacturers have unrealistic viewing picture settings out of the box in order to entice the unknowing consumer.

The website shared the optimal picture settings that bring the plasma to within several percentage points of the industry “perfect” standard of D6500K. After reading the article I decided to take a chance and buy the 50PX60U. Once hooked up, I immediately pulled up the main menu and proceeded to adjust the TV to the recommended settings. These screen adjustment settings found in the main menu under “PICTURE” include changes to Picture Mode, Picture, Brightness, Color, Tint, Sharpness, Color Temperature, and Enhanced Black Level. If you are considering buying this plasma or have already bought it, I highly recommend visiting the site. After changing the settings to the recommended industry standard, the only word I can use to describe the picture quality of this plasma TV is WOW!!!!!! It is shockingly great, very realistic, and does NOT show any of the negative characteristics that I witnessed in the major retail outlets I visited. If you buy this set (or if you own it already), you’ll find that the recommended settings will enhance your viewing pleasure immensely.
I would make several other suggestions for your viewing pleasure if you are new to the plasma market as I was. Be sure your HD source is excellent. The plasma you buy will only put out an excellent picture if the incoming signal is of excellent quality. A reliable cable or satellite provider with the proper HD in-home and outside of home equipment and HD service will provide a great HD feed for your plasma. If your cable provider is like mine, be sure to check that your HD cable box is putting out the HD 720P (P for progressive scan) signal that your plasma TV was made to use. Some boxes will default to a 1080i (interlaced) signal which is inferior to the 720P your plasma will support. Check the display on your cable or satellite box if it has one. If it displays anything but 720P, get on the phone with your cable or satellite provider to find out how to make it default to a 720P signal. If you have a DVD player, make sure it is a 720P (progressive) scan HD DVD player and check to make sure the DVD’s you use are also of 720P quality. Anything less and you will be sacrificing picture quality.
Be sure to purchase a decent HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) cable if you plan on using upstream hardware with HDMI outputs to your plasma. A decent HDMI 6' cable is about $30 on the internet. This too will give you the greatest amount of HD precision from your plasma TV. If your upstream hardware only has a DVI (Digital Video Interface) video output, be sure to purchase a DVI to HDMI cord that has a DVI connector on one end and a HDMI connector on the other. As DVI only supports video signals, you will have to run a separate RCA audio cable from your cable/satellite box for your digital audio signal (for plasma TV or home surround system) or analog audio signal (for a standard stereo). However, this is far superior than taking the easy way out purchase the right plasma screen size for the distance you’re going to watch it from. A 65? screen may be way too large for a 6' viewing distance. The high definition pixel size for a 65? screen is much larger than say a pixel from a 42? screen. If you watch too large an HD screen from your viewing distance, you will see the individual pixels losing the HD effect. A 42? and using a component hook-up instead. Component video cables supply no where near the same video quality that HDMI or DVI do. If your upstream hardware providing the signal to your plasma has neither HDMI or DVI outputs, change that hardware to one(s) that do if you truly want High Definition quality out of your HD plasma.
Also, make sure you screen may be too small if your viewing distance is 16' away. Although the picture quality would be just fine, you probably will have trouble watching it because of its diminished size. Remember, these plasma TV’s have a 16:9 aspect ratio (16? horizontal for every 9? vertical) which are nearly twice as wide as they are tall. The good news is that you get great wide se VERY concerned about the vertical viewing area. Make absolutely sure you have enough vertical screen viewing area when picking out the right plasma for your viewing distance. I would go so far as to say that paying close attention to the vertical measurement of the plasma may be much more important than consideration of the diagonal measurement, especially if you are accustomed to seeing standard TV with a 4:3 screen aspect ratio size.

But be cautious about this inherent weakness in plasma technology especially vulnerable in the first several hundred hours of use.
One last thing. You just spent big bucks creen vision far superior to standard 4:3 (4? horizontal for every 3? vertical) aspect ratio TV’s which are only 33% wider as they are tall. The bad news is that you must b on a plasma TV. Make sure you buy a good AC power surge suppressor to plug your plasma into. It’s not a good idea to buy some cheap $5 plug strip. Purchase something decent, preferably one that has a downstream equipment replacement warranty if it fails. (Better to have THEM replace your plasma TV from a power company power surge than YOU!!!)
Starting with the proviso that this TV is HD Ready and not full HD, the picture quality is very good. I am very particular about picture quality and would be quick to point out any short comings. Suffice to say that this TV does not ‘do’ full HD but does produce very good pictures that the average viewer would be hard pushed to discern the difference..
As this is a second TV in my house and used mainly for SD viewing, it is excellent.
There are a limited number of inputs on the rear of the TV but ample for most situations.
The controls of picture colour balance etc. are a bit limited but the factory set up is very good and in my option would be more that satisfactory for the end user.
As a fan of Plasmas over LCD screens due to their superior picture quality, I am a satisfied customer.

My Panasonic was not purchaded from Amazon, but I would like to warn everyone that there is a high possibility of failure of Panasonic Plasma TVs. When they work they are wonderful. My died after only 30 months and will cost £290 to repair. Search internet for Panasonic plasma blinking red light problem and you will find many people complaining their TVs will not switch on.
For a TV that cost over £700 I expected it to last for longer than this.
Last year I bought a Panasonic Blu-ray home cinema systen from Amazon, that too packed in (not recognising Blu-ray discs). I had no joy from Panasonic who never even replied to my e-mails. Amazon wonderful as ever game me a full refund which I used to buy a Sony system.
My advice is do not by Panasonic if you hope to have long trouble free use.

Solid base too with metal pillars anchoring the screen to a mirror black stand which makes the whole thing easy to move. LED fans will probably dislike the very slight reflective quality of the glass screen but the sheer quality and depth of image combined with crystal clear and sharp game play will soon get them buying plasma.

I am really pleased except the reflection, it is very reflective it is not only problem of a bright room, my sitting room is dark and gloomy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I was aware that tv is reflective when I was buying it, it reflects night standing lamps and anything that there is to reflect. I found a solution by living light in the hallway- open door and it does the trick.

first things first, i do have a 1080p top end viera plasma, so any comparison in picture quality between that and this 720p entry level viera plasma, is literally involves me walking from one room to another… of which i have done numerous times
this tv is £1000 less than my other model and the difference in picture quality on ‘every day HD’ is minimal… and i genuinely mean that. If your viewing habits involve SkyHD, a bit of Xbox or PS3, maybe some Netflix Lovefilm iTunes streaming download HD, then this tv scores an effortless 10 out of 10 for its price range. honestly, a breathtaking picture
so where’s the difference?
ok, simple to explain that one…
run the latest blu-ray on the top end 1080p plasma and watch it from say 8ft or less away, and then run the exact same blu-ray on the entry level 720p plasma from the same distance, and then you’ll start to notice the incremental difference. mild pixelation creeps in, the edges lose a smidge of their sharpness, and all round resolution just takes a tiny bit of a hit
but…
do that same test from a viewing distance of say 12-15ft, and those incremental differences pretty much disappear to the untrained eye
Super Sunday looks amazing, Downton Abbey looks amazing, Call of Duty and Fifa look amazing… buy it
We had been thinking of a new TV for the living room for the last couple of years, this model was the right price and size and as it is a panasonic was surprised at the low price. Delivery was quick but when I opened the box found that the screen was shattered, I returned it, which was a very easy procedure and I was relieved the replacement arrived two days later. The TV looks and sounds great, which is helped by the compatible panasonic sound bar I purchased at the same time, which is great if you watch movies or want to play on the XBOX etc. Don’t get me wrong the standard speakers and sound are very good but it does give it an extra punch if needed. I would not hesitate in recommending this TV to anyone.
I’ve had this TV for over a week now and have been very impressed.
I’m not going to repeat what a lot of reviewers have already stated but in a nutshell:-
1. Fantastic picture, even at 720p it looks stunning. Very smooth motion, no blurring. Nice deep blacks.
2. Very easy to set up and tunes in to channels within 6 minutes.
3. I was expecting to fiddle around with settings for hours but was very pleasantly surprised to find that the factory settings are very good, I have only made a few minor tweaks.
4. Works very well with my old Sky+ box, Roku streamer and my new Blu Ray player. (I know I can’t get blu ray quality on this TV but my player upscales my DVD’s very efficiently and still provides a cracking picture).
5. Firmware updates easy to do but how difficult would it have been to provide onboard wireless rather than expect people to be overcharged for a wireless adapter? (Cat 5 cable worked just fine for me, unplugged and stowed once my firmware had been checked)
All in all, very pleased with my purchase. At the price this quality of kit is hard to beat. I have seen it at under £300 but try to find one left in stock!
bought this tv as it had good reviews and did not have the criticisms some other makes had namely motion blur. whilst it is not state of the art i did not need the features found on more expensive tv’s typically costing £200 more.
and what about the price. £297 for a 42? plasma from the leading brand, quality wise, unbelieivable.
if you want a top quality tv just to watch tv then you will be hard pressed to find a better deal.

Now, before I start, you may think I work for Panasonic, but I don’t. I do work with televisions so I have been exposed to a variety of makes and models, but I assure you, I am simply in love with this Television!
I had been shopping around for quite a while as I wanted to buy a new TV in the post-Christmas sales. At first, I was going to settle for a 32? LED, simply because of the price. With plenty of choice for around £300, there was little to be sniffed at! Close to purchasing a reasonable sized Samsung, I thought, I would have a last minute check to see if there were any better offers. Not particularly wanting to buy something above 37?, I was reluctant to consider a plasma screen, but 37? televisions are hard to come by, for whatever reason. But anyway, after opening the ‘Plasma’ category on Amazon, one of the first results was this beauty. I was aware that plasma screens came at a minimum of 42? which, when taking into account the size of my living room, was a little worrying. This brings me to one of the most important factors which I was taking into consideration:
1) Design
This TV is beautifully designed. The bezel is not the slimmest around but it also makes the screen feel a little less bulky than some of the other plasma and LCD models of the same size. The actual depth of the TV also helps it look a lot more appealing (They could have made it thinner if it didn’t need space for ventilation). The stand is very sleek and the screen sits relatively close to it so there’s no worry about wobbly stands! It actually fixes into the TV via a couple of sturdy metal bolts that looked around 9 inches long. Overall, this TV will blend nicely into your living room without dominating the space like many other models can. I genuinely didn’t think a plasma could be this nice to look at.
2) Build Quality
As I already mentioned, the stand is very sturdy and fixed into place really well (you’ll have to screw it together but it’s nothing major, as long as you can use a screwdriver). When stood up, it doesn’t rock or wobble which can also be a problem with a lot of TV’s I’ve had in the past, namely an LG which always managed to end up pointing at the floor. One of the nicest parts of this model is that the back panel is made out of metal. Again, this makes you feel like this is a top of the range model. The bezel isn’t made of metal but it is a solid black plastic which doesn’t bend under force. I don’t know if this was to do with the strength of the screen or the cautiousness of the courier but, I was terrified the screen would be cracked when it arrived. Fortunately, I was wrong!
3) Features
When I was looking for a TV, I wasn’t really bothered about Smart features as I have an Xbox for watching Netflix, YouTube etc. I also didn’t really want a 3D TV as it’s a bit of a novelty for me and I also don’t like the thought of watching TV with a pair of ruddy great sunglasses on! The absence of these features also helps to keep the price down, which is a win for me!
Not having the 1080p resolution isn’t a big worry as, apart from BluRay, I don’t think there is anything that takes full advantage of this resolution. The Freeview HD isn’t broadcast in 1080p but, you wouldn’t be able to tell, put side by side. So far there is BBC HD, BBC1 HD, ITV HD, Channel4 HD and Channel 5 HD. I’m sure more will be added in the future but that’s the lot for now! Watching programs in HD is a joy and the picture is so crisp and clear. The settings will need a little tweaking but some people will probably be happy with the default settings. Even the standard Freeview channels aren’t exactly poor quality. They’re a damn sight better than I’ve seen on some LCD screens. I’ve not really seen any motion blur with this TV, either through films, games or sports so this TV does a really good job of erasing that all too common problem. Colour is sharp and clear and blacks are deep. The picture could easily rival some of the £1000+ TV’s that are out there.
The USB playback is a nice feature which allows for your music, videos and pictures to be viewed on the big screen. I’m not entirely sure which file formats it supports but I haven’t run into any problems, so far. The menu system which you use to access these is simple to follow, much like the rest of the settings menu. The TV is responsive to button presses and scrolling and all the font is nice and clear so you can see it from a distance. Even the EPG is easy to follow and shows you the next 7 days of programming. One thing that might bug some people, but certainly isn’t a deal breaker, is the fact that the EPG fills the whole screen and also cuts off the audio when you’re looking at it. For myself and others, this won’t be a problem because most of the EPG-ing occurs during ad breaks. You’ll enjoy using the remote, as silly as it sounds because the buttons are big and memorable so you’re not fumbling around for them in low light to try and see which is which.
The sound, unlike any LED is quite good. Obviously with the slim and neat size of this, the speakers weren’t going to be brilliant but they are most definitely better than expected. What a lot of people don’t realise is that, with especially films, it’s usually the way in which the sound has been recorded that causes voices to be quiet and music/explosions louder than average. Look it up online! The sound is definitely above par with this unit.
All in all, this TV has been one of the best I’ve purchased or had the joy of using. If you want a TV that is brilliantly built and with chopped down features, this is most definitely for you. If you’re honestly expecting to get 1080p and Smart features for (when I bought it) £289.99 you’re living in a dream world. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed with this purchase because I certainly wasn’t. After just graduating from University and finding my first real job, I wanted my first months pay to go on something I wouldn’t regret and I am glad I chose this. Being a Computer Science student, I’ve always been picky over technology but this fits the bill and is brilliant value for money. Don’t miss out!
